4 Simple Solutions to Prevent Pediatric Dental Disorders

Caring for a child can be overwhelming at times. While you may focus on their general health, their oral health should be a priority as well. Prevention is your best weapon against decay, cavities, and gum disease, so you should teach your child at an early age how to properly care for their teeth and gums.

With these simple tips and the help of your dentist, you can educate your child on preventive measures that will protect their smile for many years to come.

1. 2x2

Your child may believe they are brushing their teeth in the most effective manner possible, but they may not actually be spending enough time on this task. Without adequate brushing, food and plaque will build up on the teeth, eroding enamel and increasing the risk of cavities and decay.

The American Dental Association recommends teaching your child the 2x2 rule, which means your child should brush their teeth for two minutes twice a day.

Flossing is also important for removing food and plaque from between and behind teeth. However, the 2x2 rule isn't necessary for flossing; once a day is sufficient for effective prevention of dental issues.

2. Fluoride

You most likely already understand that regular checkups are helpful for protecting your child's teeth and gums. Unfortunately, you may not realize that an application of fluoride is a necessary part of one of your child's basic checkups.

Over time, basic wear and tear can erode tooth enamel. Without this protective coating, the teeth are more susceptible to stains, cavities, and decay.

Fluoride is one of the only ways to repair tooth enamel. This natural agent re-mineralizes enamel, enhancing the look of the teeth while helping to fight cavities and decay. Even though dentists can apply fluoride directly to your child's teeth, certain toothpastes, mouthwashes, and water can be used, as well.

3. Diet

Following a well-balanced diet is key to your child's health, but it is also important for preventing dental issues. Your child should consume a variety of fruits, vegetables, and proteins to ensure they receive essential vitamins and minerals.

For example, green, leafy vegetables, such as spinach and kale, are rich in beta-carotene. This mineral strengthens tooth enamel. Also, salmon and milk are both good sources of vitamin D, which strengthens bones and teeth. Oranges are loaded with vitamin C, which benefits the immune system. A healthy immune system is imperative for fighting plaque, bacteria, and infections.

If you are offering your child 100 percent fruit juice, consuming large amounts of this drink can do enormous damage to their teeth. Fruit juice contains sugar and acidic properties that erode enamel and dry out the mouth. This increases the risk of decay and cavities.

If your child must drink fruit juice, consider diluting half of it with water and serve it in a regular cup with a straw. Do not allow your child to drink more than 4 to 6 ounces a day.

4. Guard

Lastly, you should guard your child's teeth against simple dangers.

Children should stop using a pacifier between the age of 6 months and 1 year. Extended pacifier use can lead to developmental issues, causing the primary teeth to erupt in an abnormal manner. Allow your child to cuddle with a stuffed toy or blanket instead of using a pacifier.

Older children who play sports should guard their teeth during practices and games. A mouth guard can be customized by your dentist, ensuring it protects your child's teeth in an effective and comfortable manner.
